The genuine reason behind my choice to become a teacher was rooted in my enjoyment of working with children and my passion for helping others. Being of mixed Indian and white heritage—my maternal grandparents having immigrated from India in 1963—I had grown up experiencing aspects of Indian culture, such as relishing chicken tikka masala, receiving new clothes during Diwali, and occasionally accompanying my grandmother to the Hindu temple. Simultaneously, I also grew up engaging in activities like eating chicken nuggets, unwrapping Legos on Christmas, and occasionally sleeping in on Sundays instead of attending church. 

Like many other biracial individuals, I found myself navigating two distinct worlds during my upbringing. Adding to this complexity was my relatively light complexion, which often led people to perceive me as solely white. I had to explicitly disclose my half-Indian heritage to others. People have guessed that I'm of Greek, Italian, or even Hispanic descent, but rarely half-Indian. 

On occasions, I've had to "prove" my heritage to Indian and Pakistani individuals by listing traditional dishes like gulab jamun or aloo paratha or correctly pronouncing family names like Lakhshmi and Gopalakrishnan. These personal encounters instilled in me a desire to ensure that my students were aware of my biracial background. Therefore, on the first day of teaching, I made a deliberate choice to introduce myself to the class by sharing details about my education, interests, and cultural heritage.

As a teacher, I understand and appreciate the importance of character building in students and inculcating good values in them. Teaching God's love is a valuable aspect of their overall development. Here are some tips and tricks to help you on your mission:

Lead by Example: Demonstrating God's love through your actions and words is crucial. Show kindness, compassion and empathy to your students and others. Let them see the values you uphold in your own life.
